Candles have long been associated with funerals. The word ‘funeral’ is derived from the Latin funeralis, describing a torch-lit procession. The ritual persisted through the years, symbolising the departed and celebrating life. In some South African cultures, it is traditional to hold a candle-lit vigil in the home of the deceased the night before the funeral.
